When NicAnne's oldest came out back in 2012, she had no idea what she was doing. She didn't know their words, the terminology, how to support her child, or how to let go of 30+ years of Christian indoctrination. NicAnne and her child had a good 6-12 months of screaming matches over pronouns, tears on both sides due to lack of understanding, and bucketloads of stress for the entire family.
Five years later, NicAnne's son came out, and thanks to the journey she had already gone through, she was well-prepared to help him navigate his transition. There were fewer fights, less tears, less stress. (Except when it came to her ultra-religious mother, who made everything difficult. NicAnne ultimately had to end all contact with her mother.)
So many parents of LGBTQIA+ children do not have support, resources, or access to advice about navigating this new path they possibly never expected to find themselves on. Helping parents like her who don't have the knowledge, skills, or support necessary to, in turn, help their child is a passion of NicAnne's.
